Blob
Taking inspiration from the deep-sea blobfish—of meme fame—and the fictional gaming equipment in the David Cronenberg movie eXistenZ, I designed and construced this primordial blob which would writhe menacingly when probed by the user with a suggestive pink stick, as if to say, “Hey, I might just be a blob but you better quit poking me or I’m gonna use my horrible grossness to scare you away.” This project is a response to the term “lifelike.” It’s used under the auspices of describing something fairly specific; but in reality the criteria for ‘things’ to qualify as being alive are, to say the least, pretty far reaching, so it follows that the task of assessing not even if something is alive, but just whether or not it looks alive externally, is a really fun opportunity to explore the depths of subjectivity.
